Fascia and Soffit Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fascia board? What is a soffit board?
A uPVC fascia board is a long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof where it meets the outer walls of your home. It supports the bottom row of roof tiles, protects the roof rafters from the elements, and provides a secure base for guttering.
A uPVC soffit board sits underneath the fascia, covering the roof overhang from below. It shields the exposed section of the roof between the external wall and the fascia, helping to protect it from weather damage while giving your home a neat, finished appearance.
What colour fascia and soffits should I choose for my home?
Since uPVC fascias and soffits are designed to last and maintain their appearance over time, it’s important to choose the right colour from the start. Take a moment to step back and consider the overall look of your home. Think about the colours of your bricks, window frames, and door frames. What colour would complement these elements?
If you’re still uncertain, don’t hesitate to consult with a local expert at your nearest Scotplas branch, who can offer guidance and help you make the best choice for your home.
How do you install fascias?
Proper framing and preparation are essential when installing fascias, whether you're replacing an existing one or fitting a new PVC fascia on a new build. Start by ensuring that the rafters are spaced no more than 600mm apart, install soffit bearers, and use gable ladders to ensure secure fixing for the fascia board.
Once the preparation is complete, you can begin installing your PVC fascia. Start by fitting your soffit boards. Then, select the correct height for the Jumbo fascia board before securely fixing the fascia to each rafter end. This method ensures a solid and durable installation.
How do you accurately measure for replacement fascias and soffit boards?
To measure for fascias and soffit boards, you can take simple linear measurements at ground level using a tape measure. This will give you the total meterage, allowing you to calculate the number of boards needed and make the most efficient use of any off cuts.
Measuring gable ends and bargeboards is more complex, as they lie on the incline of the roof. For accuracy, it may be best to consult a professional. It’s also crucial to account for the number of joints and corners required. Most joints are single-ended (300mm), but some are double-ended (500mm) and can provide two single trims if the fascia is under 250mm.
For soffits, you'll also need to consider the soffit joint trim, which can be cut to match the soffit width. Additionally, be sure to measure the width and depth of both the fascia and soffit boards. Keep in mind that the soffit may rest on the top brick course or window head, so allow for at least 25mm to 50mm, and around 10mm to fit into the soffit groove of the fascia.
What is the difference between full replacement boards and capping boards?
Full replacement boards (16mm - 20mm thick) involve the complete removal of existing timber boards before installing the replacement board. The new board is then fixed securely to the structurally sound rafter ends or to suitable packers attached to the sides of the rafters.
Capping boards are used for refurbishment and are installed over the existing timber boards, provided they are in good condition. They can also be fixed to newly introduced backing boards, such as 12mm marine ply. It is crucial not to cover up any rotting timber; any affected areas should be cut out and replaced with treated timber, or, if necessary, the entire length should be replaced with a ply backing board.
What are the different types of soffit boards?
There are two main types of uPVC soffit boards: plain and woodgrain.
Plain uPVC soffit boards come in several variations:
- General-purpose: Ideal for a range of applications.
- Hollow: Lightweight and versatile.
- Vented: Allows air to circulate through the roof space, helping to prevent dampness.
These are available in various colours, from classic white and black to more modern shades like anthracite grey.
Woodgrain uPVC soffit boards are designed to replicate the look of real timber and are also available in general-purpose, hollow, and vented options. These boards come in a variety of tones, from natural browns to contemporary greys.
Whether you prefer the sleek look of plain uPVC or the timeless appeal of woodgrain, there’s a soffit board style to match your home's aesthetic. Ask a fascia and soffit expert in your local Scotplas branch for more information about stock availability and delivery.
