Guttering FAQs

How to install guttering?

Preparation is crucial when installing guttering. Start by selecting a uPVC guttering system that meets your roof’s design flow rate. Your eaves gutter system should not only handle normal rainfall but also be able to cope with heavy rainfall lasting at least two minutes. You can refer to British Standard BS12056 for guidance on calculating the amount of rainwater (in litres per second) that could flow off your roof.

Replacement projects- When replacing PVC guttering, it’s common to consider a 'like-for-like' approach. However, due to the increased frequency of storms and heavier rainfall we now experience, it’s worth upgrading your system’s capacity as a precautionary measure. This ensures your guttering can manage more extreme weather conditions.

How do I maintain my uPVC guttering?

Maintaining your uPVC guttering is simple and quick. Regular exterior wipe-downs of the gutters and downpipes help keep them in good condition. While cleaning, check for any leaking joints. If you spot any, lift the gutter, clean the gaskets, and re-clip the gutter. A silicone spray can help with this process. Also, check for loose swan necks (offset bends) or downpipe clips and re-secure them if necessary.

If your gutters feed into a ‘grey water’ water butt, ensure you clean the leaf trap regularly. If there’s no leaf trap, check for a build-up of silt and leaf debris at the bottom of the water butt. This can be scooped out and flushed through with a hose to keep everything flowing smoothly.

How do I repair my uPVC guttering?

While replacement is often the best solution for uPVC guttering, regular maintenance can significantly reduce the need for frequent repairs, saving both time and money in the long run. If you are unsure, it’s always a good idea to consult a reputable local trader who can guide you through the repair process.

What size guttering do I need?

With the increasing frequency of heavy rainfall, traditional guttering systems may struggle to cope. For better performance, we recommend opting for a deeper uPVC guttering system. These systems can handle a larger volume of water than standard half-round gutters, helping to keep more rainwater away from your home.

The choice between square or round guttering is a matter of personal preference and will likely depend on your home's style. If you’re looking for something with added visual appeal, the Ogee system offers decorative detailing and is perfect for low-level roofs, such as single-storey extensions or conservatories, where it can be seen and appreciated.

How to join guttering and downpipes?

To join gutters, use a union suitable for the style of the gutter profile you’ve chosen. Fit the gutter into the moulding up to the 'fit to here' mark and clip it in place, ensuring good compression onto the gasket seal for a secure fit. It’s important to set a fascia bracket 150mm on either side of any joint or corner to provide extra support.

For downpipes, they are joined using a pipe socket. Ensure the socket detail of the moulding fits over the lower edge of the downpipe, and the spigot detail of the socket should push-fit into the downpipe below. Once fitted, secure the joint with a pipe clip underneath the socket to maintain the joint’s strength and stability.

What are the advantages of deep gutters?

With heavy rainfall increasingly putting pressure on traditional half-round or square uPVC guttering systems, deeper uPVC gutters offer significant advantages. Available in round, square, and Ogee (which features decorative detailing perfect for low-level roofs), these deeper systems have a larger capacity and can handle a higher volume of water, ensuring rainwater is efficiently diverted away from your home.

Another key benefit of deeper guttering systems is the reduced need for downpipes. For a standard detached house, just one downpipe on the front elevation and one on the back is often sufficient to manage the water flow. This not only ensures your roof’s water is properly drained but also contributes to a cleaner, more streamlined look for your home.
